Mala Patel is an Auckland based portrait and wedding photographer. Her images of babies, children, families and weddings have a distinctive style that can be described as natural, relaxed and timeless.

When you speak to Mala, her enthusiasm and excitement about her work is obvious. "I love people! I especially love meeting new people! And I'm crazy about photography! I reckon I'm the luckiest person in the world being able to combine the things I'm most passionate about – people and photography – with my work."

Mala is easy-going, friendly and loves a good laugh. Her informal and fun approach to photography makes people feel comfortable and at ease around her, and this shows in their photos. "When I'm photographing people, whether it's a family or bride and groom, I talk to and work with them in a way that allows them to relax, open up and be themselves." And that's how Mala captures those unforgettable candid moments.

She is considerate and understanding when it comes to photographing people. "I understand that people often feel awkward and uncomfortable being photographed. I know because I'm one of them". Even the most self-conscious and camera-shy people have enjoyed being photographed by Mala, and have been delighted with the results.

Rather than shooting in a studio with fake back drops and unnatural lighting, Mala does her shoots out on location. So, families often choose to be photographed at the family home or somewhere like a park or garden. For wedding party photos, Mala likes to use locations that are significant to the couple. It could be where they met or got engaged, or a café they go to together. And if you're not sure, Mala has loads of ideas. "I'm always on the look out for locations – funky buildings, cool laneways, leafy parks and pretty gardens."
